Last Saturday, I got to pretend like I still had my old job. It was great. Ann dropped me off on campus early in the afternoon and I watched Buena Vista sports all day long. I saw a men’s tennis match (against Luther no less), an alumni vs. JV men’s basketball game, a varsity women’s basketball game, and a varsity men’s basketball game.
The men’s basketball was especially exciting because the regular season Iowa Conference title was on the line. Buena Vista ended up beating Loras to win the squad’s first regular season championship in four years. The Beavers won by one point in one of the most thrilling games I have attended. It was a great atmosphere.
After the game, we talked with some friends in the hallway. Before we were going to duck out, I told Ann that I wanted to to roll back in the gym to tell the guys congratulations. I spotted one of the seniors (who grew up two houses down the street here in Alta) and he wanted his picture taken with me. Soon, so did a couple others. Then they decided on a group shot, a copy of which is below.
Those guys have shown me so much kindness over the years. I appreciate it more than they will ever know. They take the time to remember me. It truly touches my heart.
Tonight we will be going to their conference tournament. Even though I won’t be working, these guys make me still feel like a part of what they are doing.
