Forgive me father for I have sinned. It has been five days since my last blog entry.
But I have a really good reason for that. I have been away from my eye gaze computer since Friday and haven’t had a chance to write an entry independently with my eyes. But alas, purgatory is undoubtedly filled with souls who tried using that precise excuse.
Here’s the story. On Friday, Ann and I and our friend Steve drove out to Denver for the weekend and didn’t return until last night. It was a jam packed weekend filled with a lot of fun. I will fill you in on the highlights of each day.
Friday we rolled into Denver around seven. Perfect timing for a stop at burrito Valhalla, aka Chipotle. Steve had never been to a Chipotle before, so we wasted no time in introducing him to the best 1200 calories that six dollars can buy. Methinks he was as impressed as we are with the restaurant. If you like Mexican food and have still not tried a Chipotle burrito, add it to your “must do” list. It’s that important.
On Saturday, we hung out with my sister, Karla, and her family. While Ann enjoyed one of the perks of being in a city and went shopping, I did what I do best on Saturdays. I watched College football. Only this time it was better. So much better. My sister has a 60 (maybe bigger?) inch high definition television in the basement. I permanently parked my rump six feet in front of the screen and let the endless stream of games wash over me. It was incredible. I have seen high definition TV before, but I had never spent a whole day basking in its glow. Here are my thoughts on it.
It was as great as I had heard. The images were incredibly crisp. Having a wide screen shot added quite a bit to watching a sporting event. More than I had expected. Still , despite the total awesomeness of it all, it is truly a luxury item. I went back to my old television last night, and it was just fine. No eye seizures from the Low quality or anything. For my money, if I had to choose a television luxury item, I would much rather have Tivo (or any DVR) than a high definition TV. Three hundred dollars got us three years of commercial free life. So worth it. I’m not saying a high definition big screen isn’t “worth it”, but it’s a much larger investment (and often cable costs more to get the HD channels). I thoroughly enjoyed my day with HD, but dollar for dollar, Tivo is a more valuable item in my opinion.
Sunday started normally enough, but in the middle of the afternoon, Steve and I headed for the center of the sports universe, for that day anyway. My brother-in-law, Mike, scored us a pair of tickets to Game Four of the World Series. That is what prompted our trip to Denver in the first place. Traveling is not my favorite thing these days, and we have done a lot of it over the past month. But I couldn’t pass on the World Series. I have been to a couple playoff games before, but never the World Series. Ann was able to get the time off and Steve was willing to drive and help me with my needs, thereby making the trip possible.
The World Series was nuts and deserves its own entry. So tomorrow I will expand on the experience. I will say, the ticket scalping going on was unlike anything I have ever witnessed. Tickets were selling for ten times face value. I must admit, it momentarily crossed my mind to turn my $250 ticket into two and a half grand. But the ticket was a gift, and an incredible one at that. The chance to attend a World Series game is certainly a once in a lifetime opportunity.
When we were finalizing our trip plans last week, we intended to come home on Monday. Then I realized something. There was a football game scheduled for Monday night. My Broncos against Ann’s Packers. In Denver! Could Ann get another day off? I felt a little badly that she would be going all that way and not have an event. I knew if she could get Tuesday off, we could find her a ticket to see her beloved Pack for the first time in her life. I knew that the game was sold out, so I wasn’t sure that I would be able to get a wheelchair seat, but at the very least we could get her a ticket from a scalper. Trust me, tickets for the mediocre Broncos aren’t going for ten times face value
Ann’s co-workers were willing to cover her for the extra day. Karla called the Broncos ticket office and they had one wheelchair spot with a companion remaining, so we were in. Then one of my former co-workers in Denver gave us another pair of tickets. So Steve and my nephew Ben, who went to the World Series with Mike on Saturday, were also able to go. Once again, the game deserves its own entry. So more details will follow later in the week.
The highlight yesterday was pulling into our driveway following the long ass drive. Not a lot to see in eastern Colorado and Nebraska. Oh, I did have a Kit Kat in Lincoln. Haven’t had one of those in years. Very underrated candy bar.
So it was a great trip. You can see I have a lot of people to thank for making it happen. As always, it’s great to be home. In fact, I think I will stay here the rest of the month.
